The veteran actor, celebrated for his powerful performances in Hindi and Marathi cinema, leaves behind a legacy of artistic intensity, memorable characters and a career spanning nearly five decades.

PORT LOUIS, Mauritius —
Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar, whose commanding screen presence and unmistakable voice made him one of the most recognisable performers in Indian cinema, died on Thursday, 8 October 2026, at the age of 75.
Patekar died after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. He was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him. His son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed the death.
His passing marks the loss of an actor whose work crossed the boundaries between mainstream Hindi cinema, Marathi films and the more realistic tradition of Indian parallel cinema.
### An actor who brought intensity to every role
Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, Nana Patekar began his film career with Gaman in 1978. Over the following decades, he developed a distinctive acting style that relied on emotional depth, sharp dialogue delivery and an ability to portray complicated characters without losing their humanity.
His performance in Parinda earned him widespread recognition, while Krantiveer established him as an actor capable of carrying films with powerful, emotionally charged performances. His appearance in Mira Nair’s internationally acclaimed Salaam Bombay! brought further recognition to his work.
Patekar's filmography also included Prahaar, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan and Apaharan. For audiences seeking a lighter side to his acting, his portrayal of Uday Shetty in the comedy Welcome demonstrated a talent for timing and humour that contrasted with his more intense roles.
### Recognition beyond the screen
Patekar's contribution to Indian cinema received significant national recognition. He won three National Film Awards and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013, one of India's highest civilian honours.
His career reflected the diversity of Indian cinema itself: the artistic experimentation of parallel cinema, the social themes of serious drama, the emotional appeal of Marathi theatre and film, and the popular entertainment of mainstream Bollywood.
What distinguished Patekar was his refusal to disappear behind a conventional leading-man image. His characters could be abrasive, vulnerable, courageous or morally conflicted. Even in ensemble casts, his performances frequently commanded attention.
### Tributes to a distinctive talent
Tributes followed news of his death, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembering the actor's intensity, individuality and unmistakable presence. Actor Akshay Kumar also paid tribute, recalling Patekar's distinctive voice, authenticity and memorable performances.
The tributes reflect the regard in which Patekar was held by colleagues and audiences alike. His influence extended beyond the popularity of individual films to the example he set as a performer willing to take on demanding and unconventional roles.
His career also unfolded amid public controversies. During India's #MeToo movement in 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta accused him of sexual harassment in connection with a film shoot. Patekar denied the allegation, and the case was subsequently dismissed by a Mumbai court in 2025.
### A legacy that will endure
Nana Patekar's death brings to a close a remarkable chapter in Indian cinema. Across nearly five decades, he demonstrated that an actor's lasting impact need not depend on conventional glamour or a succession of uncomplicated heroes.
His strongest performances gave audiences characters to debate, remember and revisit. They also reflected cinema's ability to explore the difficult aspects of human nature: courage, anger, sacrifice, injustice and the struggle to preserve one's dignity.
For admirers of Hindi and Marathi cinema, his body of work remains a testament to the power of committed acting. His voice may have fallen silent, but the characters he brought to life will continue to speak to generations of filmgoers.
