Patanjali divides our thoughts into two broad categories – pleasant thoughts and painful thoughts. Painful thoughts are malicious and malevolent; they harm and trouble us physically, mentally and spiritually. They block our growth and disturb us internally and externally. Under the influence of these harmful, malicious thoughts, the mind becomes attracted or repelled by objects of the world. In its attempt to grab hold of what it likes and push away what it does not like, the mind provokes action. Every action breeds a reaction, and that reaction breeds a re-reaction, making up an unending reactive cycle. These thoughts make up fertile soil from which the seeds of Action have been sprouting eternally since time immemorial. Since the storehouse of Action-Reaction-Re-reaction-Fructification is unlimited and so, cannot possibly be fitted in one life, they spill over from one lifetime to the next. The cycle of Action-Reaction-Fructification keeps us bound to the external world. These actions are generated by painful, malicious, malevolent, detrimental Vritti-Thoughts. These Vritti-Thoughts, left unchecked, lead us into bondage.
