The Hindi Speaking Union, under the new team, with Chairperson Dr Anjalee Chintamunnee, and Vice-president Rijesh Ujoodha, Secretary Dr Jaychand Lallbeeharry, honoured the Hindi and Hindi Literature top performers of 2024.

The promotion of the Hindi language and culture was highlighted on Saturday 11 October 2025, at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Moka by the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Dharambeer Gokhool. The event honoured students from the 2024 cohort who ranked among the Top Ten in Hindi language and Hindi literature at both the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate levels.

Organised by the Hindi Speaking Union under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Culture to mark Hindi Day 2025, the event underscored Mauritius’ ongoing commitment to promoting linguistic and cultural diversity through education and creative expression.

Top Dignitaries present

Several personalities were present, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful; the Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Hambyrajen Narsinghen; the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mr Anurag Srivastava; and the President of the Hindi Speaking Union, Dr Anjalee Chintamunnee. In his address President Gokhool congratulated the students for their remarkable achievements and emphasised that learning a language goes beyond the confines of textbooks. He pointed out the importance of developing language skills through creative practices such as storytelling, poetry, and essay writing, and encouraged students to read, write, and speak Hindi regularly to deepen their connection with the language and culture.

Support to Hindi Speaking Union

The President also reaffirmed his support to the Hindi Speaking Union and its efforts to promote linguistic diversity and foster cross-cultural dialogue. He underlined the importance of moving beyond multiculturalism and embracing interculturalism, adding that communities should not only celebrate their own heritage but also actively share and learn from one another. Such an approach would further strengthen Mauritius’ national identity as a “rainbow nation” united in its diversity, he said.

Technology

Mr Gokhool also reflected on the role of technology in preserving and promoting languages, pointing to the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence in creating digital archives, audiobooks, and multimedia storytelling. According to him such innovations would ensure Hindi remains a vibrant tool for education, creativity, and nation-building for generations to come.
