Core Inquiry: Why does Murugan have an elephant as a vehicle?
1. Evidence in Classical Literature
In Sangam literature and the Thiruppugazh, it is evident that Murugan used not only the peacock but also animals like the elephant, goat, and horse as vehicles.
Thirumurugatruppadai: Considered the primary text for Murugan, the poet Nakkērar explicitly mentions Murugan’s elephant vehicle.
Sangam Texts: We find references to the elephant vehicle in Pathitrupathu, Akananuru, and Purananuru.
2. References in Thiruppugazh
In the Thiruppugazh, Arunagirinathar praises the beauty of Murugan riding an elephant with lines such as:
> “Nalvakai maruppin mummadhath thirusevi”
(Referring to the elephant’s tusks and strength)
He also extols Murugan riding the “Sindura Kaliru” (the majestic elephant).
3. Pinimukham and Divine Origins
The elephant vehicle of Lord Murugan is specifically named Pinimukham. He uses it during times of war and when showering grace upon his devotees.
According to the Kanda Puranam, Indra gifted his celestial elephant, Airavata, to Murugan.
4. Archaeological and Temple Evidence
Ancient inscriptions, such as those found in Villupuram, provide historical proof of Murugan seated on an elephant. Even today, several temples feature the elephant instead of the peacock:
Thiruparankundram: The first of the six abodes (Arupadaiveedu).
Thiruttani: Where the elephant remains the primary vehicle.
Other Temples: Chidambaram, Rathnagiri, Makaralli, Vellore, Piranmalai, Chettikulam, and the Sangameswarar Temple in Coimbatore.
5. The Philosophy of Saiva Siddhanta
In Saiva Siddhanta, the elephant vehicle carries a profound symbolic meaning regarding the three “Malas” (impurities/bonds) of the soul:
Anava (Ego)
Kanma (Karma)
Maya (Illusion)
The Peacock (Anava): The peacock represents Anava (Ego). Ego is born with the soul and cannot be destroyed, only subdued. Murugan sits atop the peacock to show he has conquered and controls the ego.
The Elephant (Kanma): The elephant represents Kanma (Karma). Just as he subdues the peacock, Murugan sits upon the elephant to demonstrate his mastery over Karma.
Conclusion
From the tenets of Saiva Siddhanta to ancient Tamil literature and the devotional hymns of Thiruppugazh, the bond between Murugan and the elephant is inseparable. Thank you sincerely for providing me with the opportunity to research and share these insights.
