Another Kanwar Incident Sparks Outrage and Deep Concern in the Hindu Community
The Hindu community is once again shaken and outraged following yet another road accident involving Kanwar pilgrims, this time at Belle Rive, near the AMB area. The incident has reignited painful memories of a disturbing pattern of past attacks and provocations against Kanwarthis during the sacred Shivratri period. What Happened
According to preliminary information, a group of 15 Kanwar pilgrims from Poste de Flacq was walking in devotion when they were struck by a white 4×4 vehicle. The vehicle failed to stop and reportedly fled the scene in the direction of Wootun, raising serious questions about intent and accountability. Two devotees were injured:
Pravesh Beegoo, 30 years old
Payen Mootoo, 34 years old
Both victims were promptly conveyed by emergency services to Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital, where they are currently admitted in Ward 4.1. Hospital authorities have confirmed that their state of health is stable.
Police officers from Eau Coulée and Phoenix police stations attended the scene. However, despite the rapid arrival of police, members of the community are voicing frustration that no visible action has yet been taken to identify or apprehend the driver.
A Troubling Pattern, Not an Isolated Case
This latest incident does not exist in a vacuum. Over recent years, Kanwar pilgrims have been subjected to multiple alarming acts, including:
A lorry hit-and-run involving Kanwarthis
Poisoned juice offered for distribution to devotees
Fireworks thrown into Kanwar processions at Flacq
Stones hurled at pilgrims during sacred walks at Flacq
Each episode has left scars—physical and emotional—and together they form a pattern that many in the Hindu community find impossible to ignore.
Growing Suspicion and Rising Tensions
Given this history, there is now widespread suspicion that the Belle Rive incident may not have been accidental. Community members are asking hard questions:Why do such incidents recur during Shivratri? Why do perpetrators so often escape unidentified?
Why are preventive and protective measures seemingly insufficient?
There is also a clear warning being voiced within the community: silence and inaction risk being interpreted as indifference. Many fear that if such incidents are allowed to pass without consequences, tensions could escalate, leading to anger and alienation among devotees who feel their faith and safety are not being adequately protected.
A Call for Responsibility, Not Retaliation
Community leaders and concerned citizens are calling not for unrest, but for:
A serious and transparent investigation
Swift identification of the vehicle and driver involved
Clear reassurances that Kanwar pilgrims will be protected
Firm action to ensure Shivratri remains a time of peace, devotion, and dignity
Kanwar Yatra is an act of sacrifice, discipline, and deep spiritual commitment. Devotees walking barefoot in prayer should never have to fear for their lives.
The message from the community is simple and urgent:Justice delayed is justice denied—and repeated neglect risks eroding trust at a time when unity and respect are needed most.Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
